A mesoscopic approach to model fluid/solid interaction: The contact angle (Shahriar Afkhami, New Jersey Institute of Technology)

We present a mesoscopic approach to model the fluid/solid interaction forcesin a direct solver, GERRIS, of the Navier-Stokes equations based on the volumeof fluid interface tracking method. The interaction forces are taken into account via an interface potential acting between different phases on short length scales. We show an analytic derivation of the contact angle in terms of the surface energiesbetween the fluid/fluid and fluid/solid phases. We also show examples of instabilityand breakup of thin fluid films.
