The Edge Based Interface Tracking method: an alternative to VOF ?

Accurate and efficient interface tracking algorithms are of great importance for
multiphase flow simulations. We present a novel Front-Tracking method called
Edge-Based Interface Tracking (EBIT) method, which integrates key advantages
of Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) methods and traditional Front-Tracking methods. In the
EBIT method, the marker points are located on the grid edges and bound to the
Eulerian grid. The connectivity of these markers is implicitly described through a
local data structure called Color Vertex. These local features make the method
particularly well-suited for parallelization, especially when coupled with the
Adaptive-Mesh Refinement (AMR) on quadtree and octree grids. Furthermore, the
Front-Tracking feature of the EBIT method facilitates its coupling with boundary
models for multiscale computations.

This presentation outlines the core algorithms of the EBIT method, including
interface advection and its integration with the Navier-Stokes equations. Both 2D
and 3D implementations of the EBIT method have been developed on the Basilisk
platform. The solvers are validated with a series of benchmark tests. Comparisons
against results obtained using the VOF method demonstrate the accuracy and
efficiency of the EBIT method.
